    Talk about evenly matched.The Nike Team Nationals Southwest Regional race had a distinct red or green flavor, with the Los Alamos Hilltopper and Albuquerque Academy Charger boys finishing in a dead-heat Saturday at Tempe, Ariz.The two teams tied for the title at the regional run-off, a qualifier for the elite NTN race, which will be held Dec. 1 in Portland, Ore.

    KRSN 1490 AM will carry Saturday night’s Class AAAA volleyball championship match should Los Alamos advance tonight.Los Alamos will play Roswell for the right to head to the state title match Saturday. Saturday’s final is set for 6 p.m. at Johnson Center in Albuquerque.Gene Mortensen, voice of the Hilltoppers, will be live in Albuquerque for the final.

    ALBUQUERQUE — ’Topper Town will be talking about this one for awhile.Remember the time the Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team came back from 19-10 down in game four to upset the heavily-favored Goddard Rockets?Los Alamos punched its ticket to the state Class AAAA semifinals in the most improbable of ways Thursday, shocking second-seeded Goddard in four games, 25-22, 11-25, 26-24, 25-22 to advance to tonight’s match with the Roswell Coyotes.     Following Friday’s regular season finale, Los Alamos safety Matt Zocco talked about the Hilltoppers sending a message to the Class AAAA football playoff selection committee.The message was received, but apparently not in the way Zocco or the rest of the Hilltoppers intended.After the 95-0 dismantling of the Bernalillo Spartans, Los Alamos found out Saturday night it had earned an eighth seed from the New Mexico Activities Association seeding committee.The news of the eight seed didn’t sit particularly well with the Hilltoppers.&ld

    ALBUQUERQUE — It was not the kind of start to the state tournament Los Alamos was hoping for.The Hilltopper volleyball team managed just one win in its six contests Wednesday during the pool play round of the state Class AAAA volleyball tournament.That put Los Alamos at the bottom of Pool C among the four other pool teams.However, finishing fourth will mean Los Alamos will face a familiar foe in today’s first round. Los Alamos was scheduled to meet up with Espaola Valley, which finished third in Pool A.

    Football playoff set for FridayThe Los Alamos Hilltopper football team will host the Moriarty Pintos Friday at Sullivan Field in the first round of the Class AAAA state playoffs.The game will be played at Sullivan Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.Price for admission is $8 for adults, $5 for students and seniors.No passes except New Mexico Activities Association-issued passes will be accepted.
