    Alex Kirk picked up a triple-double Saturday to lead the Los Alamos Hilltopper varsity boys basketball team to an impressive road win.Kirk, the 6-foot-9 sophomore post for the Hilltoppers, scored a whopping 30 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and rejected 10 shots Saturday afternoon as the ’Toppers earned a 72-64 victory against the Silver Fighting Colts in Silver City.The season-high point total for Kirk came just three days after he earned a season-low seven points — although he helped out in other ways, not the least of which was dishing out nine assists

    Right now, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys varsity basketball team is journeying down a long and winding road.And in the middle of a six-week long road trip, which is taking them to far-flung regions around the state, the Hilltoppers are keeping up nicely.Wednesday’s jaunt took Los Alamos to Belen, where it downed the host Eagles 67-54, putting it at 3-1 on its current road trip.Los Alamos’ guard Nik Allen dropped in 20 points Wednesday night, and Ben Allen chipped in 10 more to help the team to victory.

    A pair of Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball players were named to the All-Class AAAA second team for the 2007 season.Kristina Little and Vanessa Espinoza were both honored with second-team selections for the season for Los Alamos, while three other Hilltoppers earned Honorable Mentions.“I’m excited we got so many,” Hilltopper head coach Diana Stokes said of her team’s selections.

  • Pajarito set to open Dec. 21

    Pajarito Ski Area announced on its website that it will be up and running next weekend.The ski area will officially open Dec. 21 with four lifts running as well as “other (m)ountain services in place,” according to www.skipajarito.com.Lifts are scheduled to start operation at 9 a.m. Dec. 21 and run until 4 p.m. on all operation days.Pajarito reported it received 20 to 26 inches of snow out of the most recent storm, bringing its base total to 22 to 30 inches.

    Despite the weather hassles, the Los Alamos-Belen boys basketball game is still on for this evening.Los Alamos will travel to Belen this evening to take on the Eagles. Tip-off for the varsity game is scheduled for 7 p.m.The Hilltoppers are 4-1 on the young season and are coming off a successful swing up to the Four Corners area.

    Tonight's scheduled game between the Los Alamos Hilltoppers and the Aztec Tigers has been postponed due to travel conditions.Los Alamos High School's athletic office said the game will try to be rescheduled, but no date had yet been set.Los Alamos will play at Highland High School on Saturday. The varsity game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
