  • Golf: LAGC set to open Thursday

    Golfers who were teed off about the rough winter weather now can tee off at Los Alamos Golf Course.LAGC will be opening for the season Thursday and will be open daily, barring any late winter snowstorms. Tee times can be scheduled with the course’s pro shop.Course professional Dennis McCloskey said final preparations were being made today for Thursday’s opening.“The golf course looks like it came out of the winter in good shape,” McCloskey said.

    Just in case they needed it, members of the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team had the Magic Kingdom on their side Tuesday.Or, more precisely, the Hilltoppers had it on their shoulders.The Hilltoppers sported Disney princess temporary tattoo line they bought from a Pizza Hut vending machine at a team dinner Monday.

    No LAHS passes accepted for tourney games

    Los Alamos High School will not accept athletic passes or staff IDs for tonight’s boys District 2AAAA tournament basketball game or Friday’s girls District 2AAAA tournament game.Price for admission is $5 per person.Only New Mexico Activities Association-issued passes will be accepted.Ticket sales for both tonight’s game and Friday’s game will start at 6 p.m.

    The District 2AAAA boys basketball tournament quarterfinals will start tonight at 7 p.m. at Griffith Gymnasium.Los Alamos will play Bernalillo’s Spartans, winners of last night’s tournament first round game. Bernalillo topped Taos 82-72 to advance to tonight’s game.The Hilltoppers (17-9 overall, 5-3 in 2AAAA) have won both of their games against the Spartans this season, a 79-76 decision Feb.

    ALBUQUERQUE — Los Alamos’ swimmers entered the Albuquerque Academy Natatorium carrying a 4-foot diameter smiley face.Following the New Mexico state championship meet, one could scarcely find a Hilltopper not wearing that same grin.The Hilltopper girls took second place at the state title meet Saturday, picking up 248.5 points behind only La Cueva’s big 312 points. The ‘Topper girls, meanwhile, deadlocked with Farmington for seventh place Saturday, earning 136 points.

    RIO RANCHO — The great showing in front of the biggest stage in New Mexico prep wrestling just didn’t happen for the Los Alamos Hilltoppers.Going into the Class AAAA tournament at the Santa Ana Star Center, the Hilltoppers had high hopes of grabbing a half-dozen medals and to at least get the team name on the top half of the leaderboard.“It did not materialize,” Los Alamos head coach Eric Sorenson said. “Too many little mistakes with our fundamentals. We got caught in half-a-dozen head-and-arms. They know how to defend that move.

  • Meet the Spartans once again

    The regular season comes to a close this weekend, but there’s still plenty of basketball left.The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team has already qualified for the playoffs, and the Hilltopper boys will make an appearance in the District 2AAAA tournament next week with a chance to clinch their spot in the state tournament.Before that, though, both teams will try to close out their regular seasons on high notes. The ’Topper girls will be at Bernalillo tonight and the ’Topper boys will host Bernalillo Saturday.
