  • Boys cross country: Toppers have solid finish, gain ground on Academy

    In 2003 when the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys cross country team upset heavily-favored Albuquerque Academy for the state Class AAAA title, it had its best showing of the regular season at the Los Alamos Invitational.
    In 2007 when the Hilltoppers upset the heavily-favored Academy Chargers for the state Class AAAA title, they had their best showing of the season at the Los Alamos Invitational.
    Could the 2010 Los Alamos Invitational be a harbinger of things to come?

  • Football: LA wins big in the Valley, 51-12

    ESPAÑOLA – The Los Alamos Hilltopper football team did what it had to do in defeating the Española Valley Sundevils Friday night.
    Now, it must finish off its 2010 season with a victory and hope for a favorable outcome from the Bernalillo-Santa Fe game this week.
    The Hilltoppers vanquished the Sundevils, who have struggled through the entire 2010 season. The Hilltoppers scored with just 17 seconds expired in the game Friday night and never looked back, picking up a 51-12 victory at Española Valley.

  • Girls soccer: Toppers pick up shootout victory

    How the Class AAAA girls soccer state tree will finally shake out is almost anyone’s guess at this point, but the Los Alamos Hilltoppers made as good of a closing argument as they could.
    The Hilltoppers picked up two big wins in consecutive nights at home to end their 2010 regular season. Friday, they topped St. Michael’s in an overtime battle, 2-1, then earned a shootout win Saturday over the Aztec Tigers, also by a final of 2-1.

  • Soccer: Postseason brackets due out today

    Brackets for the New Mexico Activities Association soccer postseason are scheduled to be released today.
    Both the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls soccer teams have already clinched postseason berths, via their district titles this season.
    The Class AAAA postseason will begin Friday with first round matchups. Class AAAA quarterfinals for both boys and girls are scheduled for the morning of Nov. 4 at the Albuquerque Public Schools Soccer Complex near Volcano Vista High School.

  • Volleyball: Toppers sweep, earn district crown

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team clinched its third straight District 2AAAA title and a postseason berth by sweeping the Santa Fe Demons Wednesday night.
    Los Alamos started out slow in the first set of Wednesday’s match, played at Griffith Gymnasium, but bounced back to win 25-21. It took the next two sets by counts of 25-15.
    With the regular season district title and a No. 1 seed in the upcoming 2AAAA tournament secure, the Hilltoppers can now turn at least one eye toward the upcoming Class AAAA playoffs, which are scheduled to get going Nov. 11.

  • Sports Update 10-20-10

    Gymnastics team to host first meet of season Saturday

    The Los Alamos School of Gymnastics’ Atomic Tumblers will open their 2010-11 season at home Saturday.
    The Tumblers will host several teams from around the state in a level 3-8 competition starting at 10:15 a.m. LASG is located at 555 North Mesa Road.
    All levels except level 4 will compete in the morning session. Level 4 competition starts at 1:30 p.m.
    The meet will be the first of seven meets the team has scheduled this season.

  • Girls soccer: LA earns big win over Capital

    SANTA FE — It was a bit of a balancing act that the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls soccer team had to perform Tuesday, but it didn’t appear to be much of problem.
    About the only concern the Hilltoppers had in the District 2AAAA finale was to make sure they didn’t tire themselves out with two big games scheduled for later this week.
    The Hilltoppers took on the Capital Jaguars to close out the district season Tuesday at Jaguar Field and, as expected, routed them 10-0, finishing the game off about eight minutes early.

  • Boys soccer: Toppers nab district crown

    SANTA FE — Winning a district title was the big goal. Making a statement to go along with it doesn’t hurt, either.
    At Jaguar Field Tuesday, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team accomplished both.
    The Hilltoppers finally shook off the upset-minded Capital Jaguars in the second half of Tuesday’s game, scoring three quick-strike goals to win 3-0 and earn its third-straight District 2AAAA title.

  • LAHS athletics: Student-athlete will have petition review

    Members of Los Alamos High School’s administration will be in attendance at a hardship petition hearing Wednesday in Albuquerque.
    A LAHS transfer student is scheduled to have his petition reviewed to see if he is eligible to play boys basketball at the start of the 2010-11 season Wednesday morning. The review, which will be heard by the New Mexico Activities Association, the governing body of most interscholastic sports in the state, is scheduled for 10 a.m.
