  • Boys golf: LA takes 5th at home invite Monday

It was a day for low scores Monday on the boys’ side of the Los Alamos Fall Invitational.
The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys golf team hosted the tournament, which was played at Los Alamos Golf Course. The competition, played under near ideal conditions, boasted a dozen sub-80 rounds on the day.
Nearly half of those low scores were posted by the Hope Christian Huskies. The Huskies, who play in the small-school classification, had all five of their top players shoot under 80 Monday, while their sixth player missed by just two strokes on joining them.

  • Girls golf: ´Toppers pick up 2nd win at home tournament

It’s been a couple of years since the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls golf team has earned its way into the state Class AAAA tournament during the regular season.
But with its win Monday at Los Alamos Golf Course, it’s just one tournament away from doing just that during the fall 2010 season.
Los Alamos won Monday’s Los Alamos Fall Invitational, finishing with an overall team score of 386, 18 shots better than St. Pius X. The score gave Los Alamos its second state qualification leg in as many tournaments. Three are required for state qualification.

The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls soccer team was again routed Friday, but this time by a team it really wanted to beat.
The Hilltoppers fell on the road Friday to the top-ranked Albuquerque Academy Chargers. The Chargers ran away with the big Class AAAA contest, 5-1.
This was the first time in three seasons the Chargers scored a victory over the Hilltoppers during the regular season, although, the Chargers bounced back in each of the previous two seasons to top the Hilltoppers in the state championship game.

  • Cross country: LA boys take 3rd at Liberty Bell meet

The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys cross country team had one of the top finishes of the Division 1 race Friday at the Liberty Bell Invitational in Littleton, Colo.
The Hilltoppers finished third at the Liberty Bell meet, hosted by Heritage High School in Littleton. Paced by Daniel Roybal’s top-20 finish, the Hilltoppers nipped Smoky Hill, Colo., for third place in the race, 184-185.

  • Boys soccer: LA can’t hold on to late 2-goal lead

The math is pretty simple: 78 minutes does not equal 80 minutes.
Unfortunately for the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team, it had to learn that lesson in just about the hardest way possible Friday.
In a big Class AAAA contest at Sullivan Field Friday afternoon, the Hilltoppers held what looked like a commanding 2-0 lead with just a little over two minutes left in regulation – not counting stoppage time – against one of biggest rivals, Albuquerque Academy.

Former LA runner McNiff earns RMAC weekly honor for ASC

Former Los Alamos standout runner Ryan McNiff was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Men’s Runner of the Week.
McNiff, a senior at Adams State College, was the first runner of 2010 to earn the RMAC honor.
At last week’s Joe I. Vigil Invitational, McNiff won the men’s 8K race in a time of 24 minutes, 34 seconds, a personal best for him at the Grizzlies’ home course, Cattails Golf Course in Alamosa, Colo.

  • Girls soccer: LA can’t get much going against Rams

The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls soccer team always tries to schedule as many tough contests as it can during its nondistrict season trying to learn as much about itself and its potential weaknesses prior to district and the postseason.
But even if it didn’t have that benefit in 2010, it wouldn’t be that hard to see where it will need to improve.
