    The Sierra Club will have an open meeting at 7 p.m. in the upstairs meeting room of Mesa Public Library. Bandelier Superintendent Jason Lott will present, “How We Spent Our Summer.” He will discuss the Las Conchas Fire, the subsequent flood, Operation Frijoles Garden and the immediate future of Bandelier.

  • LA boys, girls head to Academy

    It’s one of the toughest tournaments in the state and both the Los Alamos Hilltopper basketball teams are right in the middle of it.
    Both the Hilltopper boys and girls hoops squads will take part in the Joe Armijo Classic starting Thursday. The Armijo Classic is an eight-team tournament hosted by Albuquerque Academy.
    Traditionally, the Armijo Classic has involved some of the top teams in the state and this year is no exception. Included on the boys side of the bracket are three defending state champs, while the reigning 5A champ will be the first round opponent of the Hilltopper girls in the other bracket.
    Los Alamos’ girls will take on Las Cruces Mayfield in the first round of the Armijo tournament. That game is set for 2:45 p.m. Thursday.

    Half marathon is Saturday

    The Family YMCA of Los Alamos will hold its High Altitude Half Marathon and 5K Fun Run Saturday.
    The run will start at the YMCA. Race time is 8 a.m.
    Registrations are being accepted at the YMCA or online at www.laymca.org or active.com.

    K2 Women’s Weekend seeking sponsors

    K2 Skis and Pajarito Mountain will host the fourth annual K2 Women’s Weekend Feb. 10-12.
    The Women’s Weekend is a not-for-profit event. Proceeds will provide financial assistance for New Mexico residents suffering from breast or cervical cancer. About $10,000 was raised last year.

  • Boise State set to join Big East

    NEW YORK (AP) — The Big East’s long-awaited additions are set, with more rebuilding to come.
    The conference is preparing to announce the additions of Boise State and San Diego State as football-only members and Houston, Central Florida and SMU for all sports as soon as Wednesday, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press. The five schools will join in 2013.
    The person spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity because details were still being worked out with the schools and plans for an announcement were being completed.

  • Toppers rally to top Eagles

    After scoring just one field goal in a more than five minute stretch in the first quarter, Los Alamos Hilltopper Thomas Russell sparked his team in the second quarter.
    Russell dropped in 10 straight points in the second quarter to rally the Hilltoppers over the Belen Eagles’ boys basketball team Tuesday night.
    Meanwhile, the Hilltopper defense was stout throughout the contest, holding Belen to single-digit scoring in three quarters to win 46-33.
    The win was an important one for the Hilltoppers, who not only topped a Class 4A opponent and snapping a three-game losing streak, but to give them some momentum heading into a very tough three-day tournament at Albuquerque Academy (see page 7).

    Road closure

    Northbound 15th Street between Central Avenue and Iris Street will be closed for utility work for the new municipal building. Detour signs are posted. For more information, call 662-8112.

    Parks and Rec

    The Parks and Recreation Board will meet at 5:30 p.m.. Thursday. They have changed the location of the meeting from the Training Room in the Aquatic Center to Fuller Lodge’s Pajarito Room.

    Los Alamos County Water and Energy Conservation Coordinator Christine Chavez will be the speaker at the League of Women Voters’ Lunch with a Leader Thursday at Central Avenue Grill.
