Pearce announces run for state party chairman

Rep. Steve Pearce, who will leave Congress at the end of the year after seven terms, announced his run for state party chairman of the Republican Party of New Mexico Tuesday.

The state party will elect a new slate of elected officials early next month.

Pearce, of Hobbs, is the first to make his candidacy official. Others have until Dec. 4 to self-nominate for the position of chairman or any of the other seven positions.

The state party will hold a State Central Committee meeting in Albuquerque Dec. 8. About 500 party delegates are expected to meet and elect new officers.

If elected, Pearce will serve a two-year term as chairman.

Pearce recently lost his bid for New Mexico governor, running against Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham, a Democrat.
