Darian Zachek took a solid victory Monday in the qualifying round of the New Mexico State Amateur Championship tournament.
Zachek shot a 3-over 75 Monday to pace the qualifying tournament, winning by three strokes over Chanet Fiorina and Nancy Romero.
Los Alamos Golf Course is hosting the women’s state tournament, which started with single-elimination match play this morning. The tournament continues through Thursday.
The top seven finishers in Monday’s qualifier advanced to the championship flight of the match-play event. The 2010 state amateur champ, Marisa Bautista, got an automatic bid into the tournament, although she didn’t need it, finishing sixth in the stroke-play qualifier.
One of the top local women’s players, Tami Martinson, also earned a berth in the championship flight. She shot an 85, tying her with Rosemary McKeown for seventh place.
Unfortunately for Martinson, who heads into the state tournament just a little more than two weeks removed from her win in the Los Alamos City Championship, she was scheduled to play Bautista this morning.
Other first round contests included Romero vs. Susan Daniels and Fiorina vs. Kathy Smith.
Smith had a hole-in-one Monday, shooting an ace on the eighth hole from 122 yards out.
Playing in the first flight and other non-championship flights are local golfers such as Ev Griggs and Anita Dunmar.
