An SUV driven by a 52-year-old Los Alamos woman struck a 12-year-old Santa Fe County girl in a crosswalk on Diamond Drive near the Los Alamos Golf Course Friday afternoon.

Assistant Fire Chief/Fire Marshal Brian Nickerson said the accident occurred about 4:10 p.m.

Deputy police chief Kevin Purtymun said the girl was taken to Los Alamos Medical Center where she was treated for contusions and lacerations.

"It was a fairly serious accident," Nickerson said.

Los Alamos Police Chief Wayne Torpy said his officers are investigating the cause of the accident.

"It appears the girl was crossing the street and a woman driving down Diamond hit her," Torpy said. "From what I understand, the young girl sustained some bumps and bruises. We are investigaing the incident so we can't say yet whether there will be any citations, we can say we don't believe alcohol was a factor."

Purtymun said more details will be released about the accident in a couple of days, pending the outcome of the investigation.

I'm surprised a "Young

I'm surprised a "Young adolescent" was crossing the street there by herself to begin with.

Definitely a very tough place for both pedestrians and drivers as well.

Certainly hope the young girl recovers fully with minimal pain!!!

Bad situation

My family was driving home from the Middle school at about 3:15 Friday, we noticed all of the cars parked beside the road. There were people running accross the street, people making U turns that forced people to slam on their brakes. I made the comment to my wife "someone is going to get hurt".
