Golf: Strong Kids fundraiser renamed for longtime volunteer, golfer

The Family YMCA’s third annual Strong Kids Classic Golf Tournament changed its official name to remember long-time Y friend and golf community member, Ed Griggs.
The Ed Griggs Memorial Strong Kids Classic will be Saturday at Los Alamos Golf Course. The scramble-format tournament has a 1 p.m. shotgun start time.
“I turned to Ed when I had an idea to organize a golf tournament as another way to help our Y raise money for its financial aid and youth programs,” said Matt Schmidt, president of the YMCA’s board. “He had such a great reputation as a golfer, and he was also so well loved at the Y. He did not hesitate and helped us with the first two tournaments. We really wanted to honor his commitment to the Y, his love of golf, his love of gardening and volunteerism.”
Griggs passed away shortly after last year’s tournament, which he helped organize and played in.
A memorial plaque to Griggs will be dedicated prior to the start of the tournament at the third hole. Also, children in the Y’s iCare after-school program will plant flowers in planters located at the hole as Griggs was also known for  his care of the flowers at the golf course.
Friends of Griggs and the public are invited to the plaque dedication.
The tournament serves as a fundraiser for the Y’s financial aid and youth programs. Last year’s tournament raised over $14,000 to help provide  financial assistance in the area.
Highlighting the event is a hole-in-one try for a 2012 Subaru.
In all, there is more than $40,000 worth of prizes available for the tournament.
