West Road to close Monday

-A A +A

County officials announced that West Road will close from the County Ice Rink to Camp May Road beginning at 9 a.m. Monday.
This portion of the road will be closed from
9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Friday for approximately two weeks, not including the President’s Day holiday on Feb. 20.
The road is owned by the DOE. The closure is needed so that LANL roadwork crews can resume repairs for this section of the road, which was severely damaged after flooding as a result of the Las Conchas wildfire in June 2011. LANL has been coordinating work on the repairs with county pavement crews since last fall. They will be making repairs to the canyon’s stream bed and stabilizing the roadway slopes.
The Ice Rink remains open. Visitors can access the Ice Rink using West Road from Diamond Drive, but will not be allowed to proceed past the facility. Visitors wishing to access Camp May Road and Pajarito Ski Resort will need to use West Jemez Road.
The watershed above the Los Alamos Reservoir near Pajarito Ski Resort was badly burned in the Las Conchas wildfire, increasing runoff into the canyon that subsequently caused severe erosion damage to West Road and the surrounding area.
Until the threat of monsoons passed last October and road repairs could get underway, the roadway as well as the Ice Rink remained closed until late November. Crews concentrated first on repairing the portion of the road leading from Diamond Drive to the Ice Rink to expedite opening that facility. The work being conducted by LANL will conclude the repairs that are needed to protect the road from future storm water run-off.
