U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy has died

U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy died Tuesday evening at his home in Hyannis Port, Mass. Kennedy, 77, had battled a malignant brain tumor since May 2008.

In office since November 1962, the powerful Democrat was the senior senator from Massachusetts.

Kennedy was in his eighth full term and ninth overall in the Senate.

He was the second most senior member of the Senate, after Robert Byrd of West Virginia, and the third-longest-serving senator of all time.

He was the youngest brother of President John F. Kennedy and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, both victims of assassinations, and the father of Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy.
