Tough non-district schedule awaits LAHS girls soccer

-A A +A
By Phil Scherer

With a schedule full of potential playoff teams and rematches from a year ago, the road back to the state championship game will be more challenging than ever for the Los Alamos High School girls’ soccer team.

The Hilltoppers will now be competing in District 2-4A, alongside Moriarty, Pojoaque Valley and Taos.

None of the teams in LAHS’ previous district, Albuquerque Academy, Capital or Del Norte, are on this year’s schedule, though LAHS and Academy could meet in September at the Albuquerque Academy Tournament.

In total, 10 teams on this year’s schedule finished last season with a winning record, and nine teams made the state playoffs.

Eight of the games on the schedule are rematches from a year ago, including games against two of the teams LAHS beat in the playoffs in 2017.

The season kicks off Aug. 25 at home against Santa Fe Prep, a team that went 15-1-1 last year, with its only loss coming in the Class 4A semifinals, offering an immediate test for the Hilltoppers.

Following that game, LAHS goes on the road Sept. 7 and 8 to take on Piedra Vista and Farmington. Piedra Vista went 7-11-2 in 2017, but picked up an early season win against LAHS 1-0. Farmington went 17-5 in 2017, but lost in the Class 5A semifinals to Albuquerque Academy, the team that later beat LAHS in the state championship game.

The Hilltoppers return home on Sept. 11 to take on St. Michael’s. The Horsemen went 15-7 in 2017 and advanced to the Class 4A quarterfinals. St. Michael’s also beat LAHS 3-2 in double overtime in an early season match-up.

After taking part in the Academy Tournament Sept. 13-15, LAHS will return home for three home games leading up to district play, against Bosque, Santa Fe High and Cleveland.

LAHS defeated Bosque and Santa Fe in 2017. Bosque advanced to the 4A semifinals a year ago, while Cleveland made it all the way to the Class 6A state championship game.

In district play, the Hilltoppers will take on Moriarty, Pojoaque Valley and Taos two times apiece. LAHS will play Taos on the road on Oct. 9 and at home on Oct. 18. The Hilltoppers will play on the road against Moriarty on Oct. 11 before facing them at home on Oct. 23.

The Hilltoppers will host Pojoaque Valley on Oct. 16 before heading down the hill for the rematch on Oct. 25.

In between the district games will be three challenging non-district games, as the Hilltoppers will face St. Pius on Oct. 13, Los Lunas on Oct. 20 and will finish the regular season with a game against Aztec.

LAHS won both games against St. Pius in 2017. First, it was a dramatic 2-1 victory at Sullivan Field in the regular season.

Then, in the Class 5A quarterfinals, the Hilltoppers defeated the Sartans 3-2.

Los Lunas went 14-7-1 in 2017, and advanced to the Class 5A quarterfinals.

During the regular season, LAHS beat them 4-1 in one of the signature wins of the Hilltoppers’ season.

Aztec went 18-3 in the regular season last year, but were easily handled by LAHS in the Class 5A semifinals in a 4-1 game.
