'Toppers suffer a big loss vs. Bears

The bad news for the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls soccer team is that it took another big loss Thursday night.
The good news is there is still time to recover.
Los Alamos, which was thumped at home by Volcano Vista Tuesday night, was whacked again Thursday, this time on the road by another Class 5A school from Albuquerque, the La Cueva Bears.
The Hilltoppers played even with the Bears through about 35 minutes of the first half, but a late first half Bears’ goal, which broke the scoreless tie, seemed to open the floodgates.
La Cueva would score five times in the second half to win 6-1 in Albuquerque.
“As a team we worked hard, but we let in easy goals,” Los Alamos head coach Jiri Kubicek said. “We need to stop those goals.”
Los Alamos (4-10) was outscored in its games against Volcano Vista and La Cueva this week by a combined 13-1.
However, the Hilltoppers are still playing short-handed.
The big missing piece right now is starting goalkeeper Elena Atencio, although she and Kristin Funsten, who is also injured, are expected to be back by Monday or Tuesday of next week.
But Kubicek said it was frustrating for his team to work as hard as it had this week only to allow several easy goals, most of which were a result of the defense and the goalkeeper being out of position.
But with Los Alamos back at full strength by early next week, it can still recover in time for the postseason.
Los Alamos, which should be able to sew up the 2-4A district title with little trouble and the district’s automatic berth into the playoffs, has six winnable games remaining on the season.
If it can even its record to 10-10 before the postseason, Kubicek figures the team can keep itself in line for a seed in the top half of the Class 4A bracket.

NOTE: Saturday’s game at Capital has been changed from an 11 a.m. start time to a 3 p.m. start time. The change was made to allow for Saturday’s SATs.
