The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls cross country teams will start their toughest three-week stretch of the 2013 season Friday.
That tough set, appropriately enough, begins at Albuquerque Academy. Race time is 3 p.m.
Los Alamos will travel to Albuquerque Academy to take on the Chargers, among other teams, at the Academy Invitational. Along with Academy, which is considered the team to beat in Class 4A boys and one of the teams with the best shot to dethrone the Hilltopper girls’ domination of the classification, teams from Sandia, Piedra Vista, Cleveland and Eldorado are expected to attend.
Usually about 15 teams participate in the meet. Although it’s not one of the bigger meets the Hilltoppers compete in, it’s usually a competitive one.
Los Alamos will be going into the meet well rested and off a solid performance in its last outing. Both the boys and girls won the Academy for Technology and the Classics’ Everybody Invitational Sept. 14 — the Hilltoppers were originally scheduled for the West Mesa Invitational but it was called off due to weather — earning substantial victories on both ends.
The Hilltoppers had last weekend off.
Following Academy’s meet Friday, Los Alamos will head to the Desert Twilight meet in Mesa, Ariz., a huge regional race with teams from New Mexico, California and Nevada all competing. That race is set for Oct. 4.
Following Desert Twilight, Los Alamos will take part in the Rio Rancho Jamboree in two weeks. That race is run on the same course as the state championship meet in November and virtually all the potential title contenders from around the state compete there.
