If the goal of the Los Alamos Hilltoppers was to send a message to its District 2AAAA competitors, it accomplished that quite nicely. But despite two shutout wins apiece by the Hilltopper boys and girls Tuesday in a pair of home duals, that was not really the objective.Capital and Espaola Valley, who will likely battle each other for the district basement come 2AAAA tournament time, wanted to schedule contests with the Hilltoppers, the district front-runners, in order to try to become a little bit better.Neither Los Alamos team played its strongest lineups — nor could’ve even if it had wanted to with several players out due to spring break. However, both teams still blanked both teams 9-0. Throughout Tuesday’s play, the two Los Alamos teams dropped a combined two sets in 36 matches. The wins kept both teams on track after big tournaments in Taos this weekend.“We’re definitely improving,” Hilltopper Lauren Castro said. “We started off our season a little slow, but the singles are better and the doubles are definitely better.”Castro blanked her opponent, Sophia Arellanes, from Capital in a singles contest Tuesday morning, then she and doubles partner Deanna Salazar topped Espaola Valley’s No. 1 doubles squad of Robyn Martinez/Colleen Garcia, 6-0, 6-1.The best part of Tuesday’s contest for Hilltopper girls coach Bruce Cottrell was the fact he got to throw several of his younger players in the mix and get them some varsity experience. Those players like Andrea Hengartner and Salazar didn’t disappoint. Hengartner won a singles match and was on the winning end of two doubles matches and Salazar also won her No. 5 singles match in the dual against Espaola Valley. For the Hilltopper boys, Mike Lyon, playing at No. 2 doubles and No. 1 singles along with Avery Colby, had a piece of four wins Tuesday, including an impressive win over Capital’s Adrian Barela to start the day.Lyon and Barela slugged it out in the first set, with Lyon holding on for a 6-4 win.In the second set, Lyon and Barela both stayed very aggressive. Barela approached the net on several occasions, but Lyon was able to get hard forehand by him more often than not.“I like it when they come to the net,” Lyon said. “I get the opportunity to hit passing shots, lobs. I was doing good on my passing shots (Tuesday.)”The scouting report going into Tuesday’s contest was that Capital was improved over last season, but except for a set win against junior varsity call-up Kent Ly, who still won his singles match and was on the winning end of two doubles matches, Capital didn’t have a lot to show for their efforts Tuesday.
