Taking a new direction

Los Alamos Artist Fran Stovall, who has created stain-glass and pastel art since 1993, fell into a slump.

A gallery that showed her work closed and she wasn’t doing a lot of art. But on a whim, Stovall decided to apply to be the featured artist in the Art Center at Fuller Lodge’s Portal Gallery.

Being accepted channeled Stovall in a whole new artistic direction.

“In fact, it really inspired me to move off in this direction that I’d been thinking about for years,” she said.

Stovall began producing stain glass mosaics. She explained she has collected stain glass since 1992 and recently decided to move into mosaics.

Her work depicts different aspects of nature – pale pink tulips, a dragonfly with iridescent wings and lilies the color of a sunset.

To successfully create her mosaic wall hangings, Stovall said she participated in a workshop offered at Art Xscapes in Santa Fe.

In addition to mosaics, Stovall also learned a new pastel technique. She traveled to Acoma where she was inspired to use the technique to capture the community’s stovepipe chimneys.

The images appear like photographs. The earth colored buildings contrast highly with the cobalt blue skies.

The public can see the results of Stovall’s new artistic direction at the Portal Gallery. The show opened Friday and will continue through May 2.

Stovall is a regular at the Art Center.

“I’ve been hanging out at the Art Center since 1993 and I’ve enjoyed seeing the Art Center grow into what it is today,” she said.

She added she enjoys interacting with people in the Art Center “and it’s just been a wonderful venue to do that and to put my art out for other people to see.”

Plus, it gave her the drive to expand her art. Stovall said she appreciates the opportunity to jump into the show.

It prompted her to produce more than 20 pieces of art.

Besides Stovall’s work, the Art Center is showcasing an exhibit titled, “Crossing: Fiber Color Culture.” The Art Center is open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
