The Friends of Mesa Public Library (FMPL) members welcomed five seniors and their families to the spring member luncheon  May 19.

FMPL members also announced the upcoming awards through the Friends of Mesa Public Library Scholarship and the June Ettinger Memorial Scholarship. Scholarship winners have written a personal narrative about a fiction or non-fiction book that has become important to the understanding of themselves or the human condition.

Friends Scholarship recipients included Los Alamos High School graduates Glenna Matteson, Sydney Provan, Elizabeth Stockton and Sarah Worland. Victoria Maqueda  received the June Ettinger Memorial Scholarship. Fifteen applications for the award were received this year from students who shared their impressions of books they have read.

The Friends scholarship has been given for many years, and this is the second year the June Ettinger Memorial Scholarship has been included in the yearly spring celebration. Donations in the honor and memory of Ettinger, a long-time teacher in Los Alamos, established the scholarship administration in 2008.  The Ettinger family gave an addition to that fund this year. Both FMPL members and the Ettinger family were able to increase the scholarship amounts to $1,500 this year.
