Sundevils are in prime-time game of Tip-Off Classic

Española Valley’s boys basketball team will highlight the 2011 Tip-Off Classic Friday night.
The New Mexico Activities Association will host the Arthur “Dinty” Romero Tip-Off Classic at The Pit in Albuquerque Friday. Top teams from the 2010-11 season will take part in the all-day basketball event.
The Sundevils, the Class 4A state boys basketball champions last season, will be in the prime-time game at 7:30 p.m. The Sundevils will take on the Oñate Knights at 7:30 p.m.
Española Valley won its first ever boys basketball state title at The Pit in March. Española Valley had been the favorite in each of the previous three 4A tournaments but fell short each year before 2010-11.
Oñate won the Class 5A state championship last season, defeating Manzano in the final. In fact, all but one participating team, Mora, is a defending state champion. Gallup’s girls, who upset Kirtland Central in the Class 4A championship game last season, will take on reigning 5A champ Mayfield at 6 p.m.
Tickets for the Tip-Off Classic are being sold for $10 each through the University of New Mexico athletic department.
Tickets can be purchased at unmtickets.com or by calling the UNM ticket office at 505-925-LOBO. All seating is general admission.
Romero served as a sports official for the NMAA for more than four decades and was inducted into the New Mexico Officials Association Hall of Fame in 1989.
A portion of the proceeds from the Tip-Off Classic will benefit the NMAA Foundation. The foundation awards grants and scholarships to prep sports and activities participants.

Aggies drop Lobos, 62-53

The New Mexico State University Aggies held the University of New Mexico Lobos to just four field goals in the second half Wednesday night to win the first of the teams’ men’s basketball doubleheader in The Pit.
The Lobos shot just 19 percent from the field in the second half and 28 percent in the game as the Aggies picked up a 62-53 victory in Albuquerque. The two teams will meet again Dec. 28 in Las Cruces.
NMSU outscored UNM 36-22 in the second half — only an 11-for-17 performance from the free throw line by the Lobos kept the game from turning into a rout. Aggie forward Wendell McKines scored 14 points and collected a game-high nine rebounds to lead his team to the win.
The Aggies (2-0) had lost seven straight contests to the Lobos (1-1) prior to Wednesday’s win.
For UNM, Tony Snell had 18 points, but Drew Gordon and Kendall Williams went a combined 0-for-13 against NMSU.
