Nelms named top AD in 4A

Los Alamos Public Schools announced Friday that Vicki Nelms was named Athletic Director of the Year in Class 4A.
Nelms, who has been athletic director at Los Alamos since 2007, was voted the top Class 4A AD by the New Mexico Athletic Directors’ Association. Nelms was honored at the New Mexico Activities Association Awards Luncheon last Monday.
Los Alamos High School finished second in 2010 to Albuquerque Academy for the NMAA’s Director’s Cup, the highest award given to schools by the NMAA, which governs most interscholastic activities in the state. Los Alamos earned 2,800 points in the Director’s Cup race, which is determined by a school’s finish in sports and activities for the previous years, as well as points for Pursuing Victory with Honor.

Radio personality’s new book launches Wednesday

Mike Katko, KRSN AM 1490 sports announcer, will launch his new book of poetry, “Skies and other Poems,” Wednesday at the Coffee Booth.
The book launch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
Along with his work at KRSN, Katko is also a former principal of Mountain Elementary School and past co-owner of Tony’s Pizzeria.

Cross country mile run is Oct. 21

The annual Elementary School Mile Run will return this year Oct. 21.
The Mile Run, which is held in conjunction with the Los Alamos Invitational cross country meet, will start at approximately 4:45 p.m. at the Los Alamos Golf Course.
All elementary-aged boys and girls who can run one mile are invited to participate. The event is free but participants are asked to register either at their schools or before 4 p.m. on race day.
Entry forms are available from any elementary school PE teacher in Los Alamos.
