Sports talk: Tennis teams succeed despite issues with local facilities

Once again the Los Alamos High School athletes have made themselves and Los Alamos proud.

Congratulations to all who went to state and to those who helped the teams get there! The track teams (and individuals) were superb. I follow tennis mainly, however. The second-place finishes by both the girls and boys teams is a tribute to their hard work and to their coaches (Bruce Cottrell and Giri Raichur) who continue to do a great job of guiding and encouraging. Note to those other schools: watch out for LA’s eighth graders! Grrreat!

Interestingly, we citizens praise the efforts of these tennis playing youngsters by sending them off to neighboring communities to “host” tournaments so we can spend our money on more gables and granite.

I hope each reader remembers their contributions to the county’s edifices when they are long gone from LA — yes, very few will ever return! The high school teams must still host in surrounding communities with the present tennis court limitations, but at least the county (council and staff) has adopted a 5-year cyclical plan to address the facilities that do exist. Everyone who uses these facilities should let them know their appreciation.

I — a noisy, insufferable devil — am most grateful to them for having done so. I look forward to visitors again coming and enjoying themselves on our courts in our community!
