The Lobos lost to the Netherlands national team 53-44 in Rome, Italy. The Lobos have been on tour in the country since last week.
Today, UNM will play its second game against the Netherlands to conclude the tour. UNM defeated Vicenza, Italy and the Adriatic Sea Sirens of Pesaro, Italy, in its other two tour games.
Against the Netherlands, UNM fell behind 21-8 early in the contest but battled back to take the lead in the third quarter.
The Netherlands, however, went on an extended 14-0 run, one which lasted eight minutes of the fourth quarter, to put the game away. Games on the tour consist of four 10-minute periods.
UNM’s Khadijah Shumpert paced her team with 13 points.

Aggies are tops in WAC preseason volleyball poll

The New Mexico State University Aggie volleyball team was picked by the coaches of the Western Athletic Conference to win this year’s WAC title.
NMSU, which has won two straight WAC titles, finished with six of the eight first-place votes in the coaches’ poll, earning 48 total points. That was five points better than Seattle U, which earned the other two first-place votes.
The results of the poll were released Tuesday.
NMSU finished 20-11 last season. It started the year dropping 7 of its first 10 contests before bouncing back to win the WAC title and advance to the NCAA tournament.
NMSU also earned three spots on the WAC preseason All-Conference team. Juniors Taylor Livoti, Gwen Murphy and Bradley Nash all earned the preseason honor.
The Aggies open their season at a tournament hosted by the University of Utah starting Aug. 29.
