Speech and debate kicks off

The school year has started and high school team competitions have already kicked off, including Speech and Debate team competition.
Cibola High School in Albuquerque hosted the first Speech and Debate tournament of the 2011-2012 school year and the Jemez Mountain Home School team took advantage of the one-day tournament.
It was slated as the First Annual “Novice” tournament, allowing first-time speech and debate students to get their premier tournament under their belts. JMHS had four team members enter the competition. Annika Davenport was the team’s only expository speech entrant and she was awarded fourth place overall.
The three other novices competed in “oral interpretation” and each earned an award. Dimitry Bronisz took first place; Ben Hanlon placed second; and Donnie Thompson took third place.
The other category entered by JMHS members was in storytelling and resulted in Bronisz placing first; Davenport placing third; and Thompson placing fifth.
The JMHS team took home the “Small School Sweepstakes” participation award. Second-year varsity JMHS team member, Matthew Davenport was invited to be one of the judges at the tournament, but did not judge his other team members in competition.
Bronisz, a new JMHS varsity member, earned his Nation Forensic League membership degree because of his accomplishments at the tournament.
