Toppers fall to 1-4 to start season

By The Staff

The Los Alamos Hilltopper softball team fell Tuesday to the Los Lunas Tigers on the road.
The Tigers handed the Hilltoppers a 12-2 loss Tuesday in Los Lunas. It was the fourth defeat in five outings to start the season for the Hilltoppers.
Los Alamos, which has a good nucleus coming back from last season, in which it won the District 2AAAA title, has gotten off to a slow start so far.
In its four losses on the season, Los Alamos has been outscored by a total of 42-3.
The Hilltoppers opened the season with three losses in four outings at the Piedra Vista Invitational this weekend, falling to Gallup, Portales and El Paso (Texas) Riverside before taking an 11-10 decision against Shiprock in the tournament finale.
Los Alamos, however, has spent the early part of its season without ace pitcher Monika Teter, who was finishing up her basketball season. Teter, now a junior, finished 2010 with an ERA of 2.48.
The hard-throwing Teter was solid throughout the season for the Hilltoppers, putting together her best work during the 2AAAA season as she picked up big wins against Española Valley and Bernalillo to help seal the district title.
Heading into the season, the big question for the Hilltoppers will be whether they can fill the holes left by the departure of Stephanie Abney and Brianna Radosevich, who not only were at the top of the 2010 lineup but solidified the middle of the defense at second base and center field.
Among the team’s returners is shortstop Tina Radosevich — who is also just returning from basketball — the lone senior on the squad.
Also returning after an excellent freshman season is catcher Micaela Christensen. Christensen, who hit in the No. 3 slot for most of 2010, can hit for both power and average and will be asked to shoulder a good bit of the offensive load.
Los Alamos finished 2010 with a record of 18-9. It went a perfect 12-0 in 2AAAA and won 15 of its last 16 ballgames during the regular season before being knocked out in the opening round of the Class 4A playoffs by St. Pius X.
