Snow making underway at Sipapu

New Mexico’s 2013-2014 ski and snowboard season begins at Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort in less than a month, and the resort began its snowmaking operations tonight in one of the earliest snowmaking starts in resort history.
Snow — both from the sky and from Sipapu’s fleet of snow guns — covered the slopes at Sipapu today. New Mexico’s fastest growing ski area picked up more than six inches of snow during the early morning snowstorm last week. Not to be outdone, mountain crews cranked up their snow guns just before 9 p.m. tonight to get the 2013-2014 snowmaking season officially underway.
For the past 11 consecutive seasons, Sipapu has clenched the title of first ski area to open in New Mexico.
This year, Sipapu is looking to up the ante by opening a week earlier than its historical opening date. The resort typically opens the Saturday before Thanksgiving — this year, Sipapu is gunning to open a week before, on Saturday, Nov. 16.
“Our guests have come to expect to get their first turns of the season at Sipapu, and we will be working overtime to get our mountain ready for our Nov. 16 opening,” said Sipapu mountain manager and head of snowmaking operations, John Paul Bradley.
Sipapu’s snowmakers will provide regular updates, photos and videos on how they are getting ready for the winter season on their blog, The Forecast. For the latest news, visit SipapuNM.com/blog.
