Local rugby player Liz Dinkel will travel to Laramie, Wyo., for a Friday tryout for the Eastern Rockies Rugby Football Union Women’s Under-23 Select Side.

Dinkel plays for the Los Alamos Under-19 women’s Rugby Club team, which recently qualified to play in Denver for third place in the Eastern Rockies Rugby Football Union tournament.

Team organizers felt these were big accomplishments for a team which will only be losing two starters next season.

Los Alamos traveled to Denver to compete in the qualifying round of the Colorado state tournament Oct. 24. It was the only out-of-state club that participated.

Its first match of state was played against the 2007 state champion, Fort Collins, but Los Alamos upset the defending champion, 29-5.

One of Los Alamos’ youngest players, Alex Valdez made an outstanding pass to Angie Hammer which led to a Hammer breakaway try.

Dinkel added several tries on long breakaway runs.

Sidney Provan, Michelle Dinkel, Ariel Owens, Rachel Brown, and Orli Shlachter provided good defense and ball movement in shutting down Fort Collins.

The second match had Los Alamos falling to Summit County 22-5, which also snapped the team’s four-game win streak.

A nervous Los Alamos squad fell behind early against the top-ranked Tigers. Down 10-0, Los Alamos maintained possession and used the maul and strong forward play to push inside 5-meters several times and control the ball for most of the match, yet walked away with no points.

Morgan Medrick had a good tackling game, helping to solidify the wing defense in the second half.

With five minutes remaining, Michelle Dinkel took the ball off a scrumdown and ran for ten meters did a pop pass to Sidney Provan who drove forward and then posted the ball for Liz Dinkel who was able to capitalize from the flyhalf position on the opportunity with a score in the second half of match.

The Los Alamos team is planning a rugby tour to Europe in the summer of 2009.

Spring will have both boys and girls’ rugby at all levels touch and contact. Anyone interested in learning more about rugby should contact Lyle Shay 310-4522 or Jim Dinkel 662-3513.
