Retain sheriff’s office

-A A +A

It doesn’t matter if you are a Democrat, Republican, Green, Libertarian or Tea Party member, it is time to get involved.
Local discussions are underway to decide if the County of Los Alamos should retain the elected position of sheriff.
We as Americans should always be aware of when changes could be made to impact our right to vote in the future.
I would like to take this opportunity to urge the community to contact the Charter Review Committee and the County Council to support the office of the sheriff.
While it doesn’t affect the current sheriff, it would impact future elections.
The committee meets Oct. 11 to discuss if Los Alamos County needs to retain the position. The sheriff is an elected position that oversees some very important areas in our county.
I understand that residents aren’t always aware of, or able to attend a meeting but here is a chance when you can simply send an email to voice your opinion.
Although some may view the reduction of a position as a cost saving area, I believe there are dozens of other ways we can reduce spending where it won’t cause the health and safety of the youngest members of our community to be compromised.
In support of Sheriff Marco Lucero, I could name the police chiefs over the last 15 years, but not sure if I could do the same for the office of sheriff.
Sheriff Lucero is raising the bar in updating documents and drawing on established relationships to benefit Los Alamos and ensure the law is followed to the greatest extent.
So get involved Los Alamos, if you have a question, call Sheriff Lucero at 500-5852 or email him at marco.lucero@lacnm.us.
The CRC meets next week and your voice should be a part of that meeting.
If you don’t spend the small amount of time to simply send an email, you could lose your right to cast your vote in the next election.
