Program connects parents, teens

-A A +A

Connect with Your Teen is a new program that is 8:15 a.m. every Saturday until Nov. 23 at Los Alamos High School.
“Joe’s” 14-year-old son wasn’t in trouble with the law, didn’t smoke, or do drugs and wasn’t skipping school — so why did Joe enroll in one of Family Strength’s Network’s parenting classes? “It gives us more insight into the mind of teenagers,” Joe said, “and we want to do our best to avoid problems.”
At the bagel breakfast and parenting program being offered by FSN in partnership with Los Alamos High School, instructor Michelangelo Lobato will use “Parenting the Love and Logic Way™,” an evidence-based program, to spearhead discussions that address issues such as how teens’ brain development affects their behavior, how to determine when teens are ready for more responsibility and how to discuss appropriate limits regarding school, parties and driving.
“It helped us learn how to bring up issues and make conversation,” Joe said. “We look forward to going to class.”
Lobato is the former director of the Teen Center and is currently the counselor at Chamisa Elementary. He has a master’s degree in counseling and has been working with youth and families for more than 10 years. This class is sponsored by the DWI Planning Council. FSN is a United Way Community Partner.
Bagel and coffee begin at 8:30 a.m. and the program is until 10:30 a.m.
Cost is $30/individual or parenting couple. Financial aid is available.
Free for Family Strengths Network members at the supporter level or higher.
