The Los Alamos Community Winds invites all interested musicians to join its upcoming concerts. No audition is necessary, but proficiency on a wind or percussion instrument is required. The LACW rehearses from  7-9 p.m. Tuesdays. www.lacw.org.

The HillStompers hold weekly rehearsals at 7 p.m. Mondays at the United Church (no drill). Anyone who plays a marching band instrument is welcome, regardless of age or skill level. 661-7646.

  Attention senior music students: If you attend school in, live in or take lessons from the music teachers in Los Alamos County, the Los Alamos Arts Council will sponsor your senior recital.  For application instructions call Marlane at the LAAC office at 663-0477.

Lend a hand

Help the U.S. Marines by donating new, unwrapped toys for their toy drive. Items may be dropped off at “R” wing of Los Alamos High School, in the NJROTC building by Dec. 3.

Many items are still needed for the Children’s Christmas Bazaar. Donation drop-off boxes are located at Trinity on the Hill, Betty Ehart Senior Center and Curves for Women. Suggestions (new or like-new) are toys, games, puzzles, jewelry, unopened lotions and soaps, mugs, Christmas items, figurines, slippers, scarves, kitchen  items, gifts for men (ties, wallets, slippers). Items are needed by Dec. 2, the event is Dec. 4. Ideally, items fit in a lunch bag.  Please call Cathy at 662-5266 or Beth at 662-3433 for more information.

The senior centers would like to identify people in Los Alamos and White Rock who would be willing to provide snow removal for seniors, and in so doing, be a snow angel.  The Betty Ehart Senior Center often gets calls from elders who need this service. Those willing to help should call the Betty Ehart Senior Center at 662-8920, or the White Rock Senior Center at 662-8200 and give them your contact info.


The Fuller Lodge Art Center in Los Alamos is seeking emerging and established artisans interested in selling their art work through the Gallery Shop, a popular sales outlet established in 1977 to support local and regional artists.  For more information call 662-1635.

Drop in and make holiday crafts for free at Mesa Public Library from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday. Parents and children welcome. There will also be a free Winterfest concert  from 1-2 p.m. with John Grant of Ticklefish Music.

The White Rock Family Friendly Film Series will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 16 at the White Rock Town Hall. Disney’s “A Christmas Carol” will be shown.

Divas and Dresses,” a special exhibition for the Mesa Public Library by The Santa Fe Opera, opened  Nov. 9 and will run through Dec. 30.


Mesa Public Library’s “Poetry Gatherings” is a series of evening poetry readings. The readings take place  at 6:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month in the upstairs rotunda. Anyone of any age who is interested in poetry and who would like to experience listening to, or reading poetry aloud, may read their own poetry, read works by their favorite authors or just listen.

White Rock Branch Library offers story times on Wednesdays. Lapsit/toddler story time is held from 10:10-10:30 a.m.; preschool story time is from 10:40- 11 a.m. Music and Movement (M&M) is held at 9:30 a.m. Mesa Public Library story times are Thursdays with M&Ms for children up to age 5, which is at 9:30 a.m. Storytime for ages 18-36 months is from 10:10- 10:30 a.m. and preschoolers’ story time is held from 10:40-11 a.m. Call 662-8258.
