Lab: Watchdog group looking to obtain Performance Evaluation Reports

By John Severance

Nuclear Watch New Mexico has filed a lawsuit against the National Nuclear Security Administration under the Freedom of Information Act, in the federal district court of New Mexico.
Nuclear Watch is looking to obtain the NNSA’s “Performance Evaluation Report” that awarded Los Alamos National Security $72.1 million in profit for FY 2009. The NNSA also is trying to compel the government to release its FY 2011 Performance Evaluation Reports for all eight NNSA nuclear weapons sites.
The NNSA awarded it $83.7 million in bonuses for FY 2011.
This month however, the lab conducted a voluntary separation program for its employees and 557 of them took the package. The lab said it was dealing with a $300 million shortfall and it was looking to reduce its workforce by 400-800 workers.
The lawsuit claims that the NNSA has denied the request and the suit claims that “the citizens of the United States have the right to know how our nation’s nuclear facilities are being run.”
NNSA Los Alamos Site Office spokesperson Toni Chiri referred all calls to its main office in Washington.
NNSA spokesperson Josh McConaha did not return inquiries for comment.
