National Dance Institute of New Mexico (NDI New Mexico) will showcase the “Winter Dance Escape,” performed at the renovated Hiland in Albuquerque from Friday, Feb. 28 through Sunday, March 2. The performance will feature Sergei Prokofiev’s musical classic, “Peter and the Wolf.”

“Acquisition and restoration of The Hiland last year has made it possible for NDI New Mexico to double the number of Albuquerque students we serve, from 1,200 to 2,400 children through in-school programs, as well as after school and advanced training classes,” said executive director of NDI New Mexico, Russell Baker. “‘We’re excited to have Evelyn Cisneros-Legate at the helm as our new program director, who will bring her wonderful talent as choreographer to Prokofiev’s ‘Peter and the Wolf.”

“It has been my privilege to see the development and growth in all the students, but particularly the Company Xcel group, whom I have been teaching three times per week since joining NDI New Mexico in August,” Cisneros-Legate said.
She is considered the first Hispanic prima ballerina in the United States, formerly with the San Francisco Ballet School.
“Peter and the Wolf” will be narrated by well-known local storyteller and creator of Albuquerque Balloon Museum’s “Stories in the Sky,” Laurie Magovern, accompanied by a 12-piece orchestra.

Dancers performing in the show will include members of Company Xcel — 11 pre-professional students ages 14 years and up who are highly advanced in dance, voice or acting — as well as 45 invited dancers from The Hiland after-school program, faculty, NDI New Mexico Alumni and community dance groups including The Alley Cats and New Mexico Tap Ensemble.
Along with “Peter and the Wolf,” the production will feature works by choreographers William “Bill” Evans (“Yes, Indeed”), Wendy Barker (“Puttin on the Ritz”), Stephen Legate D.C. (“Tango Pequeño”), Luke Loffelmacher (“Coffee Break”), and Bob Fosse (“Hot Honey Rag”).
Composers performing musical selections for the show include: Stuart Smith, Irving Berlin, and John Kander with additional music by Electro Dub Tango and American Football.

ACT II will also showcase several energetic pieces from five groups featuring tap, tango-influenced ballet, and jazz dance styles.

Performances of “Winter Dance Escape” at The Hiland in Albuquerque are as follows: 7 p.m. Feb. 28; 7 p.m. March 1 and 2 p.m. March 2.
