Los Alamos GOP holds special election

-A A +A

The Los Alamos County Republican Central Committee conducted a special election Jan. 3 to fill the vacancy in its chairmanship created by the recent resignation of Jordon Redmond from that post.  Robert Gibson was elected.

Gibson is a 34-year resident and has served on the county council, utilities board and on numerous other civic groups.

Other officers continuing are Bill McKerley, first vice chair; Joe Archuleta, second vice chair; Mike Weaver, secretary; and Norma Tech, treasurer. All will serve until the County GOP’s biennial organizing convention in April.

Upon assuming the chair, Gibson said:

“Political parties have an important role in our democracy, the most basic being to encourage and support candidates for public office. Nowhere is that more important than at the local level, where few citizens have the knowledge, networks, or courage to plunge into political candidacy without help.”

“Unfortunately, legislative action at the state and federal level has increasingly become a blood sport between party caucuses. But once elections are over, our local parties very rarely get involved directly in governing. That’s as I think it should be.”

“Electoral politics, particularly its party partisan aspects, isn’t my favorite component of the democratic process. But it is an essential part. My own interest is more in public policy and effective governance. However, activity by the Los Alamos County Republican Party has declined in recent years. Revitalizing the party is a job that needs to be done, so I’m willing to try to do it.”

“The Republican Party is a very large tent. We are a diverse group of people with a wide range of interests and beliefs. We welcome all who believe sensible, fiscally responsible governments that support personal and economic freedom and responsibility, instead of stifling and draining it, are worth working for.”

The Los Alamos GOP has monthly meetings on the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. The next meeting is scheduled for Jan. 17 at a location to be announced.
