Tarah Logan, head coach of the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team, left her position abruptly Monday.
Logan, coaching in her fifth season with the team, resigned from her post effective Monday. She turned in her resignation to Los Alamos High School athletic director Vicki Nelms, citing family issues.
Nelms confirmed the resignation with an email to the media Monday afternoon.
“I would like to thank for her time as the Head Girls Basketball Coach and wish her well in her future endeavors,” Nelms’ email read in part.
Taking over for the Hilltoppers will be Ann Stewart. Stewart, who is also a boys golf coach at the school, is scheduled to make her coaching debut with the team tonight when they travel to Taos.
“It’s not the best of circumstances to be taking over the team right now, but hopefully we can pull out the remainder of the season,” Stewart said Tuesday morning.
Stewart’s first day on the job was Monday and she said she didn’t try to introduce anything new to the team, although she might attempt that before the start of district.
Logan’s resignation comes at a critical time in the season for the Hilltopper program, which is exactly one week away from the start of the District 2-4A season.
The District 2-4A season is shaping up to be a tough one with Santa Fe and Española Valley both currently among the top six teams in Class 4A.
Prior to today’s game at Taos, Los Alamos lost over the weekend to St. Pius X, 50-32.
Los Alamos was without both post players Hayley Each and Marissa Larribas for that contest.
Before the loss at St. Pius, an important game which could affect the final Class 4A seeding when playoff brackets are announced late next month, the Hilltoppers (9-7) had won five of their previous six contests, including victories over Grants and West Las Vegas.
Logan didn’t return a phone message seeking comment Tuesday.
Stewart had been the head girls basketball coach at Bloomfield from 2004-2007, as well holding assistant positions at Alamogordo, Eldorado and Cibola. She coached Los Alamos Middle School basketball in the mid-1990s.
Stewart was the scorebook official for several Hilltopper games this season, but didn’t hold an official position with the girls basketball team until being named head coach.
Logan took over the Hilltopper program prior to the 2008 season. She led the Hilltoppers to a district title in 2008-09 and was named the district Coach of the Year following the 2009-10 season.
Los Alamos had advanced to the Class 4A playoffs every year under Logan, but had only escaped the first round once, that coming in 2009-10.
