For the first time since 2016, the Los Alamos High School baseball team has won a district championship. The Hilltoppers clinched the district with a 6-2 victory over Taos Wednesday afternoon at Bomber Field.

LAHS rolled through district play, losing only one time, on the road to Taos in 11 innings.

The team’s pitching staff has been a strength throughout the season, allowing an average of only two runs per game.

The theme of strong pitching continued in the final home game of the season, as Arthur Steinkamp dominated on the mound while the Hilltopper offense continued its steady play.

After LAHS fell behind 1-0 following a leadoff single by German Perez and an RBI double from Enrique Archuleta, the Hilltopper offense got to work.

Steinkamp led off the game with a walk, and Tyler Neal followed with a single right up the middle. LAHS tied the game two batters later as Hunter Swavely hit a ball deep enough into the outfield that Steinkamp was able to tag up from third base. LAHS never trailed again in the game.

After issuing a walk in the second inning, Steinkamp settled into a groove on the mound, retiring eight Tigers’ batters in a row between the second inning and the fourth inning, allowing the Hilltopper offense an opportunity to strike.
