The final week of the 2010-11 spring sports season is one of the busiest, starting with this weekend.
Los Alamos has teams competing in the state Class 4A baseball and tennis championships and the District 2-4A track and field championship. Additionally, the Hilltoppers will be involved with a crucial doubleheader in softball Saturday.
Today, the Hilltopper baseball team will open a best-of-three series with the Artesia Bulldogs. The winner of the series, which has its first game at 6 p.m. and continues at 11 a.m. Saturday, will advance to the quarterfinal round. The quarterfinals are Thursday in Albuquerque.
Also starting today are the boys and girls 4A team tennis playoffs. Both Hilltopper teams earned No. 2 seeds in the 4A team bracket and will get a bye into this afternoon’s quarterfinal round.
Los Alamos’ girls will take on the winner of this morning’s contest between seventh-seeded Belen and 10th-seeded Santa Teresa starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Jerry Cline Tennis Complex in Albuquerque.
The Hilltopper boys are scheduled to play the winner between seventh-seeded Goddard and 10th-seeded Santa Teresa.
Albuquerque Academy is the No. 1 seed in the boys 4A draw and Farmington is the top girls seed. Both teams are solid favorites.
In district competition, the track and field championship opened today and continues through Saturday in Bernalillo. Los Alamos’ teams, which haven’t been defeated or even closely challenged for district titles since joining 2-4A in 2000, are again heavy favorites this weekend.
In softball, Los Alamos will take on Santa Fe in a road doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. Saturday. Should Los Alamos sweep Santa Fe, it would win the district title outright, but if Los Alamos fails to sweep, Bernalillo could clinch the district.
