Los Alamos No. 1 singles player Astrid Hengartner bounced back from an opening round loss to win three straight matches at Saturday’s Los Alamos Invitational girls tennis tournament.
The Los Alamos Hilltoppers finished sixth overall at the Los Alamos Invitational, which was played at Capital High School in Santa Fe. Farmington won the tournament with 28 team points, more than doubling the total of runner-up Hope Christian.
Los Alamos finished with 5 team points at the tournament. The team playing their invitational — which was played at Capital because it has more useable courts available in one area than does Los Alamos — short-handed due to the start of spring break.
Saturday, Los Alamos’ top finishers were the doubles team of Gillian Hsieh-Ratliff, a senior, and eighth grader Sidra Hsieh-Ratliff. The duo finished as the runner-up in the No. 1 doubles draw.
Hsieh-Ratliff/Hsieh-Ratliff took three straight contests in straight sets before falling 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 to Farmington’s Molly Merrion/Danielle Nguyen.
At No. 1 singles, Hengartner fell in the opening round to Santa Fe Prep’s Joy Maran in straight sets, but regrouped to knock off Annabelle Forster of Taos in straight sets, then hung on for a three-set victory over Deisy Ruiz of Roswell, a match that went to a third-set tiebreaker, and Rachel Layden in straight sets to win the consolation draw.
Also for Los Alamos, Mary Brug was a winner in the first round at No. 3 singles and Jing Xie/Lauren Anaya went 2-2 in No. 3 doubles play, defeating teams from Capital and Raton.
