Golf: Osden leads team with a 92, Hobbs’ top player shoots a 4-under

The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys golf team finished third in its final tournament of the fall 2011 season Monday.
Los Alamos played at the Marty Sanchez Links de Santa Fe Monday. Monday’s tournament, however, was actually hosted by the Hobbs Eagles — Hobbs is located in the extreme southeastern part of the state.
The Hilltoppers shot a 399 overall. Only one Hilltopper was able to break 100, however. Freshman Johnny Osden finished with a 92.
Los Alamos head coach Mike Lippiatt said his team actually played most of the round better than its 399 would indicate, but there were a few blow-ups on the day that knocked scores up considerably.
Monday, the Hilltoppers were also slated to host a girls qualifier but a few teams dropped out late and that tournament was nixed. The girls team is also finished for the fall season.
At the links course, Osden played well tee-to-green, but had 11 three-putts. The greens on the course were playing fast.
Following Osden, Tanner Vaughn and Raul Roybal both shot 100. Darren Speight had a 107 and Kevin Smale, playing in his first varsity tournament, finished with a 109.
Hobbs won the tournament handily, shooting a team score of 309. St. Michael’s, the defending Class A-3A champ, finished with a 325.
Individually, Kenneth Fadke of Hobbs fired a 4-under 68 for the medalist title.
Marty Sanchez, grandson of the namesake of the course, finished with a 77 for St. Mike’s, one of two Horsemen to finish with a 77.
For Los Alamos, the third-place finish was the best finish of the fall season.
The boys and girls teams will return in the spring. Jin Park is expected back for the Hilltopper boys in the spring — Park is currently playing with the Hilltopper boys soccer team.
For the Hilltopper girls, Emma Haines and Aislinn McDonald earned two individual legs during the fall. Neither of the Hilltopper teams picked up team qualifying legs this season.
The spring 2012 schedule hasn’t been finalized yet, but Los Alamos is scheduled to host an invitational April 16 at Los Alamos Golf Course.
Dates at Santa Fe and Farmington are also tentatively scheduled for the spring.
