LA boys, girls start spring play

The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls golf teams will open the second half of their year Monday at Los Alamos Golf Course.
The Hilltoppers will host their spring invitational. Play is scheduled for 10 a.m.
The prep golf season is separated into fall and spring play. Los Alamos will have five more shots this spring at getting its teams qualified for the state Class 4A meet, which is scheduled to be played May 12-13 at the University of New Mexico championship course in Albuquerque.
In order to qualify, teams and individuals must have at least three “legs” accumulated through the regular season. Rules were changed two years ago so that the winners of the district meets no longer had automatic qualifications into the state tournament.
Los Alamos’ girls currently own two team legs, both of which were earned at a tournament in Grants in October.
Oct. 7 was by far and away the best day of the fall season for the Hilltoppers.
Not only did the Hilltopper girls pick up a team leg — their first of the season, the second came the following day — but earned four individual legs that day as well.
Bri Sanderson shot an 89 and Emma Haines a 90 at Coyote Del Mapais for the Hilltopper girls that day, while, on the boys side, Jonathan Osden and Sean Rau shot a 77 and a 79 to earn individual legs, the only two Los Alamos came up with during the fall season.
Los Alamos’ boys didn’t pick up any team legs in the fall.
Haines also earned a second leg Oct. 8, shooting an 81, the low round of the season for the girls during the fall.
Following Monday’s tournament, Los Alamos will have another home tournament April 14, then follow that up with a tournament at Santa Ana Golf Club in Bernalillo April 21.
