The Los Alamos Hilltopper hockey team remained undefeated with a big 6-1 win over the Cibolo Cougars Sunday.

Los Alamos punished Cibola goaltender Donny Templeton, putting 51 shots-on-goal in the win at Blades Ice Arena. While Templeton managed to keep Los Alamos out of the net in the first period, Los Alamos scored three times in the second and three times in the third to win 6-1.

Hilltopper Zach Mang scored a pair of goals, while Ben Havemann and Brad Picard each had a goal and an assist in the win.

The Hilltoppers (4-0-1) took 16 shots in the first period, with Templeton stopping them all. Cibola managed five shots during the opening period, but Dylan Stupka stopped all of the Cougars’ attempts.

Early in the second period, Mang picked up his first goal off assists from Ben Havemann and Brad Picard to break the scoreless tie.

A short time later, Kory Archuleta sent a pass straight to Neel Gupta’s stick. Gupta’s goal upped the Los Alamos edge to 2-0.

Late in the second period, Marina Meneakis’ wrister was redirected off the glove of John Baca, giving the Hilltoppers a 3-0 advantage.

Cibola’s lone goal came at the 8:37 mark of the third period, with Cody Cordova beating Stupka off a steal.

But Los Alamos followed with three unanswered goals. Havemann, Mang and Picard were credited with those three goals.

Not all the news was positive coming out of Sunday’s game, however. Hilltopper Max Argo was injured during the third period and had to be helped from the ice.

Following the game, Argo was diagnosed with a high ankle sprain. He will likely miss several weeks of the season.

The Hilltoppers will play Friday at home against Albuquerque Outkast.

This will be followed by a rematch against Cibola at home Saturday.

All Los Alamos home games are played at Los Alamos County Ice Rink and are free to the public.
