The Los Alamos Middle School Hawk eighth-grade girls basketball team picked up a pair of wins to start its season.

The Hawks earned a tough 17-12 win in their season-opener against Pojoaque, then followed that up with a 23-11 win over Ortiz Middle School.

The Hawk seventh-graders also started their season against Pojoaque, falling 28-12. In their second game they were nipped by Ortiz, 17-16.

Against Pojoaque, the Hawk eighth-graders were led by Katie Hemphill who had five points. Teammate Ari Larkin finished with four points, and Jen Paul, Chase Ealey and Amethyst Collins each finished with two.

Against Ortiz, LAMS' eighth-graders were able to break a tough full-court press and started getting hot in the third quarter to take control of the game.

Jenna Ortiz had six points to pace the Hawks against the Hornets. Hemphill and Monika Teter had four points, while Paul, Larkin and Jordan George each finished with two points.

For the Hawk seventh-graders, they had a tough third quarter against Pojoaque, which took control of the game at that point.

Madeline Margevicius and Christina Perez had four points to lead the Hawks in their opener, while McKenna Schoonover finished with three and Amy Neal had one.

At Ortiz, LAMS played considerably better than it had against Pojoaque, despite the loss. Hawk coach Susan Hammock said her team set itself up with plenty of good scoring opportunities but couldn't get the baskets to fall.

Margevicius had four points for the Hawk seventh-graders, while Vanessa Lowe, Allison Rooney, Gillian Ratliff, Laura Wendelberger, Anna Scott and Alex L'Esperance all had two points each.

LAMS plays Santa Fe Indian School Wednesday.
