GOLF: 2010 champ has 1-shot lead going into today's play

By Mike Cote

Halfway through the Los Alamos City Championship golf tournament, the 2010 senior men’s champion is atop the leaderboard.
And he wouldn’t be at the top of just the senior men’s leaderboad, either.
Reid Griffith turned in the low round of the day Saturday in all flights. Griffith held off Brian Colby to take the lead after the opening 18 holes of the City tournament.
Griffith finished with a 73, which would’ve placed him on top of the other two men’s flights as well. However, Colby isn’t far behind, as he finished with a 74, a score that would’ve tied him for the lead in the men’s championship flight.
The tournament concludes today. Tee time is 9 a.m.
On a day when scores were higher than most expected, Griffith’s 73 was something of a surprise.
Griffith was the senior men’s champion last year. He erased a two-shot deficit after the opening round, shooting a 1-under in the second round — which also tied him for the best round of that tournament, regardless of flight — to top John Stam.
Stam, the runner-up in 2010, couldn’t get in a rhythm Saturday. He finished with an 81, placing him tied for fourth with Leonard Trujillo.
Griffith and Colby were the only two seniors to break the 80-mark. Brodie Anderson, who will join them teeing off from the 11th hole this morning, is in third place after his round of 80.
