Governor to speak at two Memorial Day events

There will be Memorial Day ceremonies honoring the men and women who lost their lives while serving their country in the United States military in Santa Fe and Albuquerque. Gov. Susana Martinez will be the keynote speaker at both events.

The event in Santa Fe will be at 10:30 a.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery, 501 N. Guadalupe St. The event in Albuquerque will be at 1:30 p.m. at the Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd.

Memorial Day in Los Alamos will be observed at the Guaje Pines Cemetery at 11 a.m. Monday with the theme of  “We Remember Those Who Fought and Died For Freedom.

”This year’s keynote speaker will be Kevin Smith, the manager of the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Los Alamos Site Office.

This year’s observation in Los Alamos is a joint community event coordinated by the following service organizations: American Legion Post 90, Elks Lodge 2083, Knights of Columbus Council 3137, Military Order of World Wars, Daughters of the American Revolution Valle Grande Chapter, Los Alamos Auxiliary Fire Brigade, and the Los Alamos High School Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps.

This year’s host is the Veterans of Foreign Wars, John D. Gamble Post 8874.

Shortly following the ceremony, everyone is invited to a light lunch to be served at the VFW, 1793 Deacon Street.
