Girls track and field: LA places second at APS meet

Ahlers, Honnell qualify for state

For the second week in a row, the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls track and field team finished second behind the La Cueva Bears in the team standings.
At the Albuquerque Public Schools Invitational Saturday, the Hilltoppers finished with 58 points, second to the Bears’ 61 points. The Bears are one of the top programs in Class 5A.
None of the other 21 teams taking part in Saturday’s meet were in striking distance of either La Cueva or Los Alamos.
Along the way Saturday, Los Alamos earned five event wins and two more state meet qualifying marks.
Madison Ahlers ran a season-best 1:01.04 in her 400 meters preliminary heat to earn a state qualifying mark. Ahlers won the final race with a time of 1:01.22.
Also Saturday, Victoria Honnell qualified for state in the 1600 meters. She finished with a time of 5:34.31 to qualify.
Chase Ealey, one of the Hilltoppers top athletes, won three events Saturday, taking the 100 meters (12.56), javelin (115 feet) and shot put (40 feet, 11-1/2 inches).
Los Alamos’ team of Amy Neal, Ahlers, Ealey and Laura Wendelberger won the 400 relay.
Wendelberger, who has come up big so far this season, had third-place finishes in the high jump, long jump and 300 hurdles and a fourth-place finish in the 100 hurdles.
