The team of Grace Kim and Brenna O’Hara were the top finishers for the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls tennis team at its season opener this weekend.

Kim/O’Hara, playing in the doubles flight of the El Paso, Texas, Americas High School tournament, went 4-1 to take ninth place this weekend.

The tournament was held at four different sites around El Paso. In all, 32 teams took part in the tournament.

Los Alamos had just 10 regularly-scheduled practices under its belt heading into this weekend’s tournament and was missing a big portion of its projected 2009 squad, some of which are currently involved in winter sports.

Teams in the tournament entered two singles, two doubles and two mixed doubles into the draw.

Following Kim/O’Hara, Hilltopper team Bryn Smith/Andrea Hertgartner went 1-4 in doubles, putting it in 28th place overall.

In mixed doubles, Megan Townsley/Stephen Townsley went 3-2 to take 10th place. Colleen Fitzsimmons and her partner went 2-3, placing them 26th out of 32 teams.

In singles competition, Gwynn Cunningham was 1-4 overall for the Hilltoppers and Naomi Movshovich finished 0-5.

“Our seniors, Brenna, Grace and Megan, all placed in the top 10,” Hilltopper head coach Bruce Cottrell said. “The rest of our team got to play. They didn’t fare as well, but they got some valuable experience.”

Los Alamos will be closer to home when it plays again at Rio Rancho March 7.
