The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team again struggled in its second outing against the Volcano Vista Hawks.
Tuesday night, the Hilltoppers were held to a total of six points in the first and third quarters as the Class 5A Hawks took a 57-26 victory in Albuquerque.
Volcano Vista (11-2), which has been steadily improving through the last several seasons and has a true senior class for the first time since the school opened nearly four years ago, is likely to be a contender in the very competitive District 1-5A, spearheaded by bruising junior guard Emma Fenske.
It was the second win of the season by the Hawks over the Hilltoppers (3-9), who have a grueling week of games, including a huge contest Friday night at St. Pius X. The Hawks knocked off the Hilltoppers 55-39 in the first round of the Joe Armijo Invitational last month.
Hilltopper head coach Tarah Logan said her team reacted better to the Hawks’ full-court pressure than it did in their Dec. 9 meeting, but struggled with its shooting. Los Alamos connected on just 11 of 49 attempts from the floor (22.4 percent).
Meanwhile, Tina Radosevich, who was named to the All-Tournament team in the Roswell-Goddard Classic last week, picked up two quick fouls Tuesday and was relegated to the bench for a big chunk of the contest. Radosevich averaged 13 points, six rebounds and five steals in the three-game tournament in Roswell.
Los Alamos trailed 39-12 after three quarters, but Logan said the team defense started to improve midway through the third quarter, giving Los Alamos some momentum heading into the fourth, in which it scored 14 points.
Monika Teter had seven points to lead the Hilltoppers, also grabbing four rebounds.
Freshmen Hayley Each and McKenzie Logan combined for 11 points, while Logan had a team-high eight rebounds.
Los Alamos outrebounded Volcano Vista 34-17 on the night, a big departure from its previous contest in which Volcano Vista was dominant on the boards on both ends of the court.
For the Hawks, Fenske had 12 points to lead all scorers.

NOTE: Los Alamos High School announced Tuesday the girls basketball game against Piedra Vista, which had been postponed due to weather Dec. 17, has been rescheduled for Feb. 19. The C team game is scheduled for 11 a.m. and the varsity game will start at approximately 2 p.m.
