Expressions in book art

-A A +A

With the advent of e-book readers, the work of book artists is even more precious and wonderful, providing a very creative and personal vision of the art of the book. Savor and enjoy these unique, beautiful books, imagined and created by the members of BAG — Book Arts Group, on view at Mesa Public Library during October.
Handmade, hand bound, hand printed, these are not books in the ordinary sense: the books on display include a wide variety of binding techniques, assorted materials and embellishments, flag books, sewn books, accordion books and books that fold and twist, curl and turn. From work that is wildly creative and humorous to serious and contemplative, the members of BAG present an inspiring look at what is called “book arts.”
All of the exhibiting artists are members of the Santa Fe Book Arts Group. They use a wide range of materials and techniques to create the books, including a variety of bindings (accordion, Coptic, longstitch, stab), content (calligraphy, photography, poetry), forms (pop-ups, altered books, boxed books, sculptures), and paper (handmade, commercial, decorated).
Expressions in Book Art is a partner exhibition with a concurrent Contemporary Book Arts Exhibition at the New Mexico State Capitol Rotunda Gallery which runs through Dec. 13.
The timing of this exhibit of handmade books is especially fitting because the New Mexico Library Association’s Mini-Conference, with librarians from across the state participating, is in Los Alamos on Oct. 17 and 18.
The book artists will greet the public at a reception on from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 4. Thereafter the gallery is open during normal library hours: noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The public is welcome to attend and the reception and exhibit is free and runs Oct. 1-30.

The changing form of the book and its use as a medium of unique visual expression is a phenomenon which has developed in America during the last twenty years. The use of the terms “Book Arts” and “Artist’s Book” has been applied to categorize these new and innovative book-like structures over which the artist maintains control of its final appearance. The end product is a work of art in itself.
Artists’ books are works of art that employ a wide range of forms, including scrolls, fold-outs, pop-ups, accordions, origami, or loose items.
