Diamond Drive Phase 4  Please review with inexperienced drivers.
Expect a significant change from previous phase traffic control, which typically consisted of two southbound lanes on Diamond Drive to provide primary accommodation to morning southbound commuters.
This change was mandated by the LANL Traffic Engineer, whose approval was required to set up traffic control on federal land, which begins at the east end of the bridge.
County staff will closely monitor traffic this week and will evaluate the success of the traffic control plan at the end of the week.
Motorists should plan for a minimum delay of 20-30 minutes. Consider adjusting schedules to avoid Diamond Drive during peak travel times; take Atomic City Transit to reduce the number of vehicles on the road; carpool, and, where possible, use alternate routes.
The traffic switch was delayed to Monday, March 28, at 8:30 a.m. At that time, the contractor will begin switching traffic to the east side of Diamond to establish a work zone between the Los Alamos Canyon Bridge and University Drive.
For the first 1 – 2 days, traffic control will be fluid as the contractor places work zone striping. Once the switchover is complete, expect the following:
Northbound from the bridge – expect two lanes, with a left turn bay at West Road, through lane, and right turn lane into the hospital parking lot.
Two lanes continue northbound with the right lane peeling off to eastbound Trinity. No left turn onto Trinity; those in the left lane must continue northbound through the intersection. Use West Road or Sandia to access Trinity. Once past Trinity, one lane continues northbound through the work zone.
Southbound from University Drive – Expect two southbound lanes south of Sandia.  The left lane will be a through/left turn lane at Canyon Drive and a left turn lane at Trinity Drive.  The right lane will be the through lane for traffic crossing the bridge.  There will be a left turn bay at West Road to provide access to the Medical Center.
The Canyon Road driveway into Sullivan Field will be closed.
Access the First Methodist Church from University Drive through Mesa Field and Sullivan Field parking lots.
Transit: Park & Ride bus stop between Trinity and West Road will be moved to the bus stop near the old Lemon Lot, north of Trinity.
The Atomic City Transit bus stop on Diamond Drive north of Canyon near the High School Jock Lot will be closed; use the bus stop near Orange.
Pedestrians: Pedestrians will be directed to the east side of Diamond Drive at West Road.
Pedestrians may cross Diamond at signalized intersections or at the pedestrian overpasses.
Bicyclists: Take a lane or dismount and follow pedestrian path.
High School Students: As construction gets underway, the available parking in Sullivan Field will be reduced for staging. Please use Mesa Field.
Quemazon Gas Line Installation:
Work continues in Quemazon subdivision at the Brisa del Bosque/Esperanza intersection leading to the Montessori School.
The contractor is installing a gas line to the school. Access will be provided for residents. Entrances to the school will be maintained.
Work Zone Reminders:
Do not enter the construction boundaries, stay within the provided vehicular or pedestrian access area.
Construction areas are closed to the public for obvious safety reasons.
Moving established traffic control devices endangers lives and is a crime punishable by a $300 fine and/or 90 days in jail. Please report suspicious activity or suspected tampering to the Police Department by calling 911 or 662-8222.
