The annual Los Alamos County Science Fair will take place on Jan. 23 in the Los Alamos High School cafeteria.  The public is invited to view the projects from noon-2 p.m.

Students in grades kindergarten through 12th grade will display their projects in elementary, elementary class, junior and senior divisions.

The elementary projects are divided into three categories. The students in junior and senior divisions will compete for first, second and third place and Honorable Mention in 17 categories.

This will give them an opportunity to participate in the Northeastern New Mexico Regional Science and Engineering Fair in Las Vegas, N.M., on March 6.

Each student will receive feedback from the judges, who will assess the student’s scientific approach, skills, creativity, clarity and thoroughness.

Therefore, the participation in the County Science Fair is valuable experience for student learning.

In fact, the mission of fair is to provide a quality science fair by helping participants develop projects and communicate their understanding of the scientific method and/or engineering principles.

Participation at the Science Fair helps the students achieve State Standard I for every student in every grade level.

This standard requires students to understand the processes of scientific investigations and use inquiry and scientific ways of observing, experimenting, predicting and validating to think critically.

The deadline for submission of science fair forms is Oct. 23. Students should turn forms into their school science fair coordinator or Dawn Brown, Los Alamos County Science Fair coordinator.

Local sponsors who provide special awards make the Los Alamos County Science Fair a memorable event.

Last year more than $7,000 in awards and donations were received from the Los Alamos community.

Portage Environmental and the J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Committee were T-shirt sponsors.

The donations of these two organizations ensured all 228 participating students received a science fair T-shirt.

This year Los Alamos National Security, LLC and Los Alamos National Laboratory have pledged corporate sponsorship for the 2010 fair.
