Broadband for everybody

-A A +A

In the upcoming meeting this Tuesday night, the county council will be considering moving forward in creating a county broadband network called the Community Broadband Network (CBN). The council vote on Tuesday could be one of the most important votes for our future needs. The country is moving forward and the question is will Los Alamos County join in the future of our nation -- or be left behind?
The CBN is a complete fiber network and would include every home and business, extending fiber into every premises. Currently, some of the Internet services from major providers are not adequate for the coming revolution in digital services.
Why do we need fiber optic broadband? Demand is increasing – by 2014, Internet usage will increase by 90 percent. The growth of Internet video is expected to rise more than 20 times over the next few years, and global IT traffic has risen by 800% in the last five years. While cable and DSL providers struggle to squeeze small increments of higher bandwidth out of their technologies, ongoing improvements in fiber constantly increase available bandwidth. That’s why fiber networks are said to be “future proof.”
The cost of network construction is not cheap. In Taos, the Kit Carson broadband network cost $65 million to construct. The CBN is a smaller initiative with costs starting at $42 million.
