The Y offers nutrition education

A six-week weight management class will be from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Sept. 16 at the Y Express. This class will focus on a “non-diet” method of weight management. Weekly classes will address various nutritional topics, as well as provide fitness advice. The fee is $50 for Y members and $75 for others.
Free diabetes education and prevention class to all members of the community. Classes will be from 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. Sept. 16 at the Y Express. This class will help one take the steps necessary to make the research-based lifestyle changes that can prevent, or delay the disease and is appropriate for pre-diabetics, diabetics, caretakers, or those that want to learn more.
Personal Nutrition Counseling appointments are also available at the Y on Fridays; other days are available with advance notice.
All of our nutrition classes are taught by Sara Pocernik, MS, RD, CNSC who has experience in many areas of nutrition. She completed her bachelor’s degree in dietetics and nutrition science at Michigan State University, and a master’s degree in nutritional biochemistry from Tufts University. She has also worked as a clinical dietitian in intensive care and dialysis units.

Suicide awareness week at LAHS

Assets in Action will participate in the following activities all week long.
Monday: Pass out bracelets that will have schedule of week attached to them. Bracelets are green and say “Speak Up, Reach Out.”
Tuesday: Random acts of kindness day. Everyone will get a list of random kind acts and they will try to do three from the list that day and then try to finish off the list by the end of the school year.
Wednesday: Compliments and carnations day. Twenty-three Natural Helpers plus students Faith Glasco and Elizabeth Hjelvik will hand out carnations and compliments to the entire school, including teachers and staff.
Thursday: The Wall. Assets in Action will sponsor a wall for students, teachers and staff will answer the questions What makes life awesome? Why do I matter as a person? Post them on the wall.
Friday: Speaker Ross Szabo will speak to the ninth and tenth graders at 8 a.m., the 11th and 12th graders at 9:45 a.m., the middle school at 2 p.m., and to the community at 6:30 p.m. The community is invited to hear him speak. Admission is free, and it will be in the Duane Smith Auditorium.

LAHS offers bus service to college fair

Los Alamos High School is offering bus service to the Rocky Mountain Association for College Admission College Fair at the University of New Mexico Arena, “The Pit,” on Sept. 29. The bus will leave LAHS at 10 a.m. and return at approximately 5 p.m. The cost for the bus is $15. A minimum of 20 students is needed or the bus will be cancelled. Interested students should register with Connie Goettee in the Career Resource Center by Sept. 25.
The annual RMACAC College Fair attracts more than 100 colleges and universities from all over the country. Students who are planning to attend this free event should pre-register at gotocollegefairs.com. RMACAC uses a barcode and scanner system to expedite the exchange of information between students and colleges at their recruiting events.

Artists needed for last two outdoor markets
Los Alamos Commerce and Development is looking for artists and artisans to participate in the last two outdoor Artist Markets for the season from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 28 and Oct. 12 at the White Rock Visitor Center.
