The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team had another rough outing against the La Cueva Bears Tuesday.

The Hilltoppers, who have struggled against the Bears in the teams’ recent meetings, struggled again Tuesday in Albuquerque, falling to the Bears 6-0 in a nondistrict contest.

In the last three meetings with La Cueva, starting in 2007, Los Alamos has been outscored by a combined 18-0.

Los Alamos (12-6) generally likes to schedule tough teams like La Cueva — one of the top programs in the state — late in the season to help it prepare for the postseason. La Cueva (16-2-1) is the top-ranked Class 5A program in the state according to the latest coaches’ poll on NMSoccer.com.

Los Alamos has just two regular season contests remaining, today against Española Valley — the status of that game and the girls soccer game following it at Sullivan Field wasn’t known as of press time — and Saturday at Capital. While Los Alamos had little trouble with the Española Valley Sundevils (4-11 overall, 0-5 in district) in their first meeting Sept. 24, the meeting against Capital will decide the District 2AAAA championship.

Capital (15-2, 6-1 in 2AAAA) can earn the district title with a two-goal win in Saturday’s game.
